What do we mean by close blood relatives?

Blood Relatives

are related to you through blood, not by marriage or adoption.

Close Relatives

are near you in your family tree. We sometimes say the "degree" of closeness. First-degree relatives are "closer" than second-degree, and so on.

First degree relatives:

  • full brothers, full sisters

  • parents

  • children

Second degree relatives:

  • half-brothers, half-sisters

  • aunts, uncles

  • nieces, nephews

  • grandparents

  • grandchildren

Third degree relatives:

  • half-aunts, half-uncles

  • first cousins (children of full aunts and uncles)

  • great-grandparents

  • great-grandchildren

We want to know about the health of first- and second-degree blood relatives. Most of the time, we do not need to know about third-degree relatives.
